Google AMP for seo

Want to Rank Top on Google for SEO? Speed Up Mobile Pages with AMP!

Have you been wondering why the bounce rate of your web pages, blog posts and articles keep getting high? A major reason is that your web pages aren’t loading fast on mobile browsers. That is, they are not amp pages. Hence, you need to speed up your mobile pages with Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP).

It is no more news that many online searches and internet related activities are being carried out using mobile devices more than desktop computers. Thus, speed is an important part of designing and developing web pages today.

According to SocialMediaToday, “53% of mobile website visits are being abandoned because they take more than 3 seconds to load“.

This is why it is a priority for web designers and publishers to speed up mobile pages with the AMP framework. If not for any other reason, but because it will provide a better experience for your users and it will greatly enhance search engine optimization (SEO) for your site.

In a nutshell, pages that are AMP-optimized rank better and faster and they most certainly convert more mobile page visitors into customers.

What is Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)?

what is amp

Accelerated Mobile Page (AMP) is a project from Google and Twitter designed to make mobile pages fast. It is a stripped-down form of HTML pages designed to be super lightweight and critically fast loading.

It consists of certain HTML tags. That is, some HTML tags can’t be used. You also need to use a light version of CSS. Then JavaScript is not allowed at all. Having in mind that pure speed and readability is to be attained and then all this is designed to be heavily cached so that Google can host these pages.

How accelerated mobile pages work?

how amp works

According to the diagram above, we’re all used to a regular web page. This is labelled as “Blog” in the diagram. This is the regular desktop version of the page. In the source code, if you have an AMP version, you would specify that with the “rel” AMP HTML link, which points to what we call the “hosted AMP page”.

So, the hosted AMP page is a page on your domain constructed of a stripped-down form of HTML. If you want to see this in action, I’ve referenced Helprocure’s Blog AMP Page here. You can put “/amp” at the end of any news story, post or article on a site and see the AMP HTML.

It is linked in display with the AMP HTML link in the source code. So that’s the hosted accelerated mobile page, which has nothing to do with Google. You can just do that, and it is designed to be faster. Yet, Google also rolled out a free hosted cached platform as well, which is labelled with the static.

So when you see these pages showing up in Google search results, the version that shows up there will be hosted on a gstatic.com, in other words, a Google-hosted cached version.

And both of these, both the one you host yourself and the version that is cached around the Internet potentially even by other people as well, both of those would contain the rel=’canonical’ back to the original site/web page.

Now, the mobile accelerated pages are fast because the HTML is cut down, but it’s also designed that they are bits of content that can be cached potentially by anyone without rel=canonical pointing back to you.

Accelerated Mobile Pages vs Progressive Web Apps

difference between amp and pwa

  • Accelerated Mobile Pages loads fast every time and Google caches the URL while Progressive Web Apps loads slowly on first delivery, but caches the pages in the background and will give fast experience on further click.
  • Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) needs an internet connection to load the pages while Progressive Web Apps (PWA) loads all the pages offline because of caching by a service worker.
  • Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) can be accessed only through browsers while Progressive Web Apps (PWA) can be pinned to the home screen of a smartphone.
  • Accelerated Mobile Pages are suited for heavy static content websites like blogs, articles, news etc while Progressive Web Apps can be used on all sites including eCommerce and feature-rich sites.
  • The technologies required for mobile accelerated pages are AMP HTML, AMP JS and AMP Cache while the technologies required for Progressive Web Apps are Web App Manifest, Service Worker and App Shell.
  • AMP’s do not need to be served by a secure server while PWA’s require a secure server (https) to work.
  • PWA is reliable in providing all information to the user, which AMP lack as they remove many scripts which you’ve added on your website to improve the conversion rate.

How to Create AMP Pages

Convert HTML page to an Accelerated Mobile Page

The basic idea of mobile accelerated pages is to reduce the amount of unnecessary content and functionality so that the page displays essential content immediately. The data can be reduced up to ten times. The three essential components of accelerated mobile pages are:

  • AMP HTML

AMP HTML is a simplified version of regular HTML. AMP HTML does not allow some tags and elements of HTML (for example, forms). To understand better what AMP HTML should look like, check out the required mark-up.

  • AMP Components

These are the scripts that enable you to do without JavaScript. The idea of AMP is to get rid of all JavaScript scripts as it makes pages load more slowly. But this does not mean that your page should do without animations, modified layouts, analytics data, autocomplete suggestions, or ads. There is an extensive library of components that enable you to implement these and a lot of other features.

  • The AMP CDN

This is a proxy-based content delivery network which fetches and caches page content. AMP CDN enables you as a website owner to easily introduce page updates. It optimizes and, if needed, modifies the accelerated mobile page.

Convert WordPress to AMP

install amp wordpress plugin.

It is very easy to convert your WordPress website or blog to a mobile accelerated page with the help of a plugin. All you need to do is download the AMP WordPress plugin, install and activate it.

The fastest and most common way to install the amp plugin is to install it as you would for any other WordPress plugin. Learn how to install and activate a WordPress plugin.
